During the summer of 2026 severe weather caused flooding and power outages in Gary, Indiana and its environs. A derecho wind event on August 11, coupled with tornadic activity (two tornadoes: an F1 and F2) and severe ("historic") flooding, left 95 percent of Lake County (363,398–374,500 customers of Northern Indiana Public Service Company [NIPSCO]) as well as many citizens of six other local counties (Carroll, Fayette, Henry, Porter, and Tipton) without power. (Coincidentally, Lake County had also been hit by five tornadoes in the month of June--from which many citizens were still waiting for recovery help.) As of August 18, the Chicago Tribune was reporting that 26,836 customers were still without power. On August 23 over 20,000 NIPSCO customers were still reporting no power. By August 25, 95% of NIPSCO's regional customers had had their power restored (though over 3500 were still without).
The travesty of this whole event is the fact that the none of the area's 38 data centers experienced a single minute's loss of power. This fact grossly illustrates and reconfirms the fact that the priorities of corporations and the billionaire capitalists who drive American capitalism do not include humans or human health and well-being.
